Solas and Birth - Salt Spring Island Doula Support

At Solas and Birth, I offer birth and postpartum doula support on Salt Spring Island and throughout the Gulf Islands. It would be my honour to walk with you through your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum - support shaped by the lens I see the world through: nervous system regulation, herbalism, and yoga.

Every birth is different, and every family deserves to feel heard and respected, whatever choices they make, and wherever they choose to give birth. I support home births, hospital births, and everything in between, always centring your choices without judgment.

Afterward, my care continues into the postpartum weeks, as you and your baby settle into this new chapter.

Meet Jess

My name is Jess. I'm originally from Germany, but I call Salt Spring home now. I got into birth work through my practice as a somatic bodyworker, sitting with women as they processed what had happened to them in their bodies, including birth trauma and birth experiences. Being that close to it is what made me want to become a doula myself.

Herbalism, yoga, nutrition, bodywork, that's the lens I see the world through. I believe the body carries its own wisdom, and that so much of healing, and so much of birth, is about learning to trust that again.

Becoming a parent is one of the biggest thresholds a person will ever cross. It changes everything, the body, the identity, the whole shape of a life. I feel called to walk alongside people through that transition, to help them feel held, trust themselves, and feel a little less alone in something so vast.

Postpartum support

Looking for postpartum support only? I offer that on its own too. Reach out and I'll talk through what would work for you.

What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?
A midwife provides clinical care — monitoring you and your baby's health, and delivering the baby. A doula doesn't provide medical care; I offer continuous emotional, physical, and informational support alongside your midwife or doctor, before, during, and after birth.
How far along should I be before we start working together?
Many clients reach out in their second trimester, though it's never too early or too late to ask. If you're close to your due date, reach out anyway and we'll see what's possible.
Will you work alongside my midwife or doctor?
Yes, I support your care team rather than replace it, and I'm glad to coordinate with your midwife or OB so everyone's on the same page going into your birth.
What does a doula actually do during labour?
I offer continuous physical, emotional, and informational support. Comfort measures, breath and movement guidance, help communicating with your care team, and calm, steady presence for you and your partner throughout labour and birth.
What happens at a free consultation?
We talk through your pregnancy, what you're hoping for from birth support, and whether we're a good fit, no pressure, and no obligation to book.
When should I hire a postpartum doula?
Many families start visits in the first 1–2 weeks after birth, though support is available anytime in the first year.
